1.  Oral Exam Strategy – The Closing

There are those who would tell you to raise the flag and beat the drum with a lot of fanfare in your closing statement. Please spare us this part. Understand if you haven't done a great job in the body of your presentation, you're not going to make it up in the closing. REPEATING, IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE IT IN THE BODY OF YOUR ORAL PRESENTATION, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT UP IN THE CLOSING! We had a candidate who tried to show us all his certificates during his closing. McFly?  

Don't forget that the closing part of an interview is where you call on the emotions of the interviewers to give you the job. Don't reiterate.  Some try to do repair work. Oh, yea, I didn't screw up that answer bad enough the first time around, I want to go back and dig a bigger hole
and really screw it up. It's in cement. Leave it alone.  Use only the key points not already covered in your script. Without being boring or lengthy, thank the panel for their time, tell them why you really want the job and with your qualifications hope to be considered for the position.

Then shut up and get out of the building. Or you will say something stupid. We had a guy one day ace his oral. After his closing, he said, "Well, if I don't get this job I can always fall back on that part time painters job." The panel couldn't believe what this guy just said after acing his oral. Did it hurt his score? Enough to keep him from getting a shot at a badge. Last time I heard, he was still painting. Another candidate said, "Well, I guess you heard about the charges of stealing
against me over at the college?" No, we haven't. You want to share?

Here's a tip: If they haven't already asked why they hired you over the other candidates you could use this as a closing statement: 

Only you the panel can evaluate the qualifications of all the candidates; I can't.  But this is what I know about myself.  With my education, experience, ability and integrity if I'm given the opportunity for this position when the emergencies take place the least you will have to worry about is . . . . . (long pause here)  ME.

Captain Bob,

     After a lengthy process of written test, physical agility tests, interviews, more interviews, I was finally called in for my conditional job offer with the fire chief and two assistant chiefs. I walked in very calm and confident but not over confident to were they could tell. I introduced myself to the chief and then the assistant chiefs. I had made it a chore to stop by the LR training academy on several occasions so that the training chief would remember me. He did and passed that on to the Fire Chief before I ever walked into the Fire Chiefs office. Needless to say, the interview was AWESOME. I was offered the job pending me passing my physical. Later that week, I passed the physical, got a final call from the OPS Chief with the final job offer and I start on the 14th of April. The Oral Board Entry Level CD/DVD Program that I purchased was worth more than what I paid for it. I can't believe how well I interviewed and it was all about the NUGGETS.  Thanks Captain Bob.

2. Examination Announcements and Preparation

• San Antonio, Texas.  Applications will be accepted at the Fire Training Academy, 300 S. Callaghan Road at Highway 151 from June 2-June 27.  Applications will be accepted by mail ONLY if you live 100 miles or more from San Antonio – you may request an application packet from May 26-June 13 by calling 210-207-8427 or e-mailing your request on their website.  Examination date: August 15, 2008.  Qualifications:  Must be at least 19 years of age at time of testing but not yet 34 years of age; must have high school diploma or GED.  For complete announcement details, visit their website at http://www.sanantonio.gov/safd/Recruit.asp

• Washington, DC.  Applications are available beginning May 15, 2008 and can be picked up from all DC Fire/EMS locations or downloaded from the DC Personnel website ( http://dcop.dc.gov).  Applications must be submitted in person only on June 14, 2008 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mt Vernon Place, NW, Washington DC.  The first 3000 qualified applicants will be invited to take the examination.  Examination date:  August 23, 2008.  Requirements:  US citizen, ages 19-30; valid driver's license, HS diploma or GED.  Salary range:  $44,301 to $65,588.

3. Cleveland, Ohio, Examination Update

The next Cleveland Firefighter Exam is anticipated for July 2009 with sign-up anticipated for June 2009.  Over 100 firefighters will be hired from this list.  If you would like to be put on a mailing list to be notified when the exam will be and when Don McNea Fire School will conduct classes, call 440-572-3919.  Please note – City of Cleveland residents receive an extra  10 points on your examination score.

4. Student Loans for School

Many institutions don't list or qualify as eligible education institutions when it comes to federal financial aid or financially eligible/accredited programs or vocational schools (let them tell you no before making assumptions). 

Most private institutions do have a particular bank that is utilized by their students; you may want to get in contact with them.  Although student loans though banks can be at a higher interest rate, they're still at a lower rate than credit cards.

One candidate wrote: I went through Wells Fargo PLATO loans.  I got a great rate and it was very east and quick to get the money.  Of course, it all depends on your credit history.  It's also good to have your credit cards just in case since there are so many things you get nickel and dimed by in school.  http://www.wellsfargo.com/student/loans/undergrad/career.jhtml

Another candidate wrote: I highly recommend trying FAFSA first it's the cheapest route. By utilizing FAFSA I was able to get Pell grants, the BOG (waives tuition) and still use my GI Bill.

Still more: If I had attended an eligible program, and received the appropriate 1098-T form at year's end, I could have deducted up to $4000 off of my 2005 Adjusted Gross Income tax filing.

Another way to get in an academy is through http://www.trainingdivision.com This is a home study program that you can complete on line at your time schedule and then go to Texas for the hands on 2-3 week completion to obtain your certificate.  Cost?  About $2,800.

5. What Were They Thinking?

Recently, two fire applicants walked out of a fire exam.  Right outside the door, they started talking about the exam and discussing the questions.   Little did they know, a Civil Service employee who was proctoring the exam was right around the corner.  He overhead them talking, asked them for their names, and they were subsequently removed from the examination process. 

The moral of the story is that if you are going to talk about the exam, wait until you get home or call someone on the phone away from the site.  Don't talk about the exam where others can possibly hear you!
