Participates in classroom lectures, seminars and practical training sessions as directed by the Fire Department.
Receives and participates in various types of training in fire suppression and emergency medical services up to and including Paramedic Certification.
Participates in drills, demonstrations and instruction in hydraulics, pump operation, maintenance, fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical services


Applicants must be in possession of a Texas Commission on Fire Protection State Fire Fighters Certification Basic or higher and a Texas Department of State Health Services Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) Certification Basic or higher prior to taking the examination to be eligible to be hired by the City of Houston.

No experience is required. Applicants must have at least 15 transferable college credit hours, with a grade of "C" or better from an accredited college or university. Transferable hours mean that the hours will be accepted at the institution that is certifying the grades for the Houston Fire Department.

Must be at least nineteen (19) years of age when applying and less than thirty-six (36) years of age before receiving the oath of office.

The exam will be open to candidates, who have made a proper application and have met the requirements of Chapter 143 of the Local Government Code for beginning positions in the Fire Department, which are listed in the Fire Application.


ONLY "on-line" applications will be accepted. On-line applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2008.

1. The minimum passing score is 70 percent on the written examination before the extra five (5) points for qualified veterans are added.
2. Per Chapter 143.025 of the Tex. Loc. Gov't Code, an additional five points shall be added to the examination grade of an applicant who served in the United States armed forces, received an honorable discharge, and made a passing grade on the examination. Applicants who are eligible for extra military points must provide a copy of their DD214 (Member-4) to the examination site to receive these points. The DD214 will be subject to later Houston Fire Department verification.
3. An applicant may not take the examination for a particular eligibility list more than once.
4. The eligibility list created as a result of this examination will be effective for a period of not less than 6 months or more than 12 months as determined by the Civil Service Commission.
5. Passing applicants will be referred to the Houston Fire Department to continue processing. Any falsification in the application process will result in disqualification. Applicants must pass all phases of the recruiting process.
6. Applicants' eligibility for hiring will be determined in rank order from the eligibility list.

$5,689-$6,837 depending upon qualifications and experience. City pays employee's contribution (9%) of PERS 3% at 55 plan, single highest year, and provides a comprehensive benefits package.

Candidates shall be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. All candidates shall submit copies of the following with the completed application: (1) valid California EMT-P license or proof of currently attending an accredited paramedic school; (2) certificate of completion issued by a fire academy approved by the California State Fire Marshal; or Firefighter I certificate issued by the California State Fire Marshal (3) proof of passing CWH written Exam; (4) proof of passing the Candidate Physical Agility Test or the LA/Orange County Fire Chief PAT. Possession of a valid California driver's license is required upon filing and will be used as identification prior to all portions of the selection process. In addition, employment offers are contingent upon the candidate passing a comprehensive physical, psychological, and polygraph examination, including a substance abuse test and a thorough background investigation.

Note: After a candidate is appointed, conditions of continued employment include initial and/or continued accreditation to practice as an EMT-P in Los Angeles County, ability to obtain and maintain a California Class "A" or "B" commercial driver's license within 18 months of employment and to be entirely tobacco free and not use tobacco products at any time during employment.

STEP 2: Submit examination fee(s). Payment must be received 14 days prior to test session date. - The Video-based Written Examination is $40.00. The Candidate Physical Ability Test is $60.00. STEP 4: CPAT- Candidate Physical Ability Test- is a pass/fail process. Candidates must complete the entire CPAT course, in the prescribed manner, within established time limits. Applicants will be notified of pass/fail at conclusion of exam. Candidates who successfully complete both tests will be entered on an eligibility roster. Candidates on this roster will be referred to hiring member departments based upon required specifications of the department and candidate-specified desires.

STEP 5: CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) Orientation. The orientation is optional. The orientation is designed to help candidates prepare for CPAT testing.  Maintain a current driver's license.
 Unrestricted Kentucky Paramedic License is required for additional duties of paramedic; however, all paramedic's are responsible for firefighter duties.
