Delegation:
Delegation involves the dimension that certain tasks are delegated to the proper level or position. Tasks or activities must now be assigned not only to the lowest possible level but also to the person who will be the best to handle it. Delegation is a process of using your subordinates in the most effective and efficient manner, but also keeping in mind that the subordinates that are selected to do these tasks for you must be carefully selected. Fire officers and firefighters accomplish work through others; therefore, an officer must be able to delegate in order to effectively perform his or her job in the most efficient manner. If delegation is not used and subordinates are not used to their full potential, a fire officer can seem overwhelmed and will not be able to properly perform his/her duties.
High ratings for delegation include:
- using staff to gather pertinent information when an important decision must be made (the more information you have available to you, the better your decision will be)
understanding the best decision-making level
insures that completion of objectives are in a timely fashion
considers the experience and responsibility level of the subordinate when assigning duties
delegates decisions down to individuals lower in the organizational chart
makes sure that the delegation is clear to the individual involved
does not overdelegate to some individuals and underdelegate to others
takes appropriate action to resolve problems
